Limni - Evia Greece

The magnificent village of Limni is located in the northern region of Evia and represents a unique tourist destination. It is 80km from Chalkida and 33km from the famous spa town of Edipsos.

You can access Limni from Athens by road via the capital of Chalkida or by ferry boat from Arkitsa to Edipsos. From Thessaloniki in the north of Greece, you can reach Limni via the ferry boat service from Glyfa to Agiokabos.

Limni is builr close to the ancient city of "Elymnio" (thus taking the name Limni), where, according to mythology, the marriage of Zeus and Hera took place. The area, because of its marine character, showed great prosperity during the Roman and Byzantine era and suffered many raids from pirates and other invaders.

The inhabitants of Limni played an important role at the time of the German occupation as they were actively involved in the resistance against the Germans with the heroine Lela Karagiannis. Additionally, Limni was the birthplace of cartoonist Nikos Tsiforos and painter Haris Vogiatzis.

The area has a unique natural style that makes Limni resemble an Aegean island. The beautiful narrow streets with the green nature and beautiful traditional houses and mansions wins over the hearts of thousands of visitors who come here for their holidays.

In recent years Limni has seen a significant increase in tourism. On the coastal road there are several cafes and tavernas where you can enjoy a coffee or a meal overlooking the sea and the lush hillside of the village.

Besides the beauty of the area Limni has several natural and historical attractions to visit. Some of them are the Folk Museum that exhibits objects from traditional Limni houses and the church of Osios Christodoulos located near the beach.

At a short distance from Limni are the monasteries of Osios David and Agios Nikolaos (or otherwise known as Galataki monastery) and the beautiful waterfalls of Drimonas that form a unique scenery. On the hill of Kastoria the ruins of a medieval castle discovered as well as subsequent findings that unearthed a Neolithic settlement.

You can swim at Limni beach or you can choose nearby beaches such as Agios Georgios, Kochyli and Vrysoula. For more interesting outings we suggest the pebbled beaches found near Galataki Monastery, some of which are only accessible by boat.
